On October 28, 2024, Texas Medical Center’s (TMC) Helix Park hosted the “October Odyssey: Startups in Space” event, featuring discussions on how space-driven technologies can advance healthcare. Moderated by Dr. Emily Reiser, Strategy and New Ventures expert at TMC, the event highlighted startups such as TRISH, Zibrio, Mongoose Bio, and Ejenta, all of which are leveraging space’s unique conditions to push healthcare technology to new frontiers.

Each participating startup has found a unique application for space-driven research and tools. For instance, TRISH (Translational Research Institute for Space Health) focuses on health solutions that support astronauts during extended space missions, and these innovations are now shaping healthcare approaches on Earth. Similarly, Zibrio, known for its stability-tracking technology, originally designed for space use, now offers tools to help prevent falls in elderly patients. These projects, initially conceived for space, are now making a real-world impact by optimizing healthcare technology for everyday use.

Mongoose Bio and Ejenta are also at the forefront, with Ejenta applying AI to monitor health in extreme conditions. Ejenta’s platform gathers data from astronauts to provide real-time health assessments, a technology that could transform telemedicine and remote health monitoring on Earth. Mongoose Bio, on the other hand, utilizes bioengineering to explore how microgravity affects cellular structures, which could inform treatments for diseases that resist Earth-bound testing conditions.

This intersection of space and health is not only a testament to these startups’ innovative spirit but also highlights the potential for space-inspired technology to transform healthcare, making it more adaptable, accessible, and efficient. With investments from TMC and other private ventures, these startups are set to redefine the future of healthcare by bringing space-age solutions down to Earth.
